In early 1993, I was catching a ride with my older brother to head back to the military academy I attended. It was the time of year we called “The Dark Ages”. It was cold and it got dark very early. In those days our access to entertainment was limited. There were no smartphones and we didn’t have cable or broadcast TV at the school. Our only connection was through movies, both at the local tiny theater and our very own VHS set-ups.
We had a few hours to kill before we left for school so I, dressed in my military uniform, and my brother sent to the local movie theater. Sniper just happened to be playing there.
I was pretty pumped to see this as I knew Tom Berenger would be in it and I loved him in Platoon and Major League. There was a chance it could have been a stinker, but I was optimistic. I wasn’t disappointed.
I remember loving the action scenes and the banter between the two lead characters. The co-star for this movie is Billie Zane. This may’ve been the first movie I ever saw him in.
I remember thinking this movie seemed sorta low budget but was very entertaining and fairly well-made.
I rewatched this movie this past weekend. I had seen it multiple times over the years, but this is probably the first time I watched it in probably 15 years. It mostly still holds up.
Billy Zane overacts at times but is mostly decent in this role. Berenger was awesome. The script is very solid, and the story is easy to follow. The supporting cast were all very solid as well.
My final score on this movie may be affected by nostalgia, but I think it’s a solid movie regardless. I’ve always loved this movie. Based on the solid acting, direction, storyline, and nostalgia I give this movie 84/100 potatoes.
