I saw this movie not long after it came out over 2 decades ago. I hadn’t heard or read any reviews for it, so I went in mostly blind. However, I was well aware of who Tom Green was. He had a show on cable TV where he did all kinds of goofy antics for shock value.
The movie is about what you expect if you already know Tom Green. There are all kinds of shenanigans and low brow humorous situations. I remember my initial thoughts on the movie were that there were at least 3 or 4 genuinely laugh out loud moments. The overall story was OK, but the execution was pretty good.
Not long after I saw it originally, I remember the movie getting crucified in the media. I believe it even got nominated for several “Razzies“, the award ceremony where they choose the worst movie, actor, director for that particular year.
There was a theory at the time that Tom Green tried to make the worst movie he had because he was under an obligation to the movie studio and really didn’t want to be there. That theory has to be bogus. This movie is quintessential Tom Green. You can tell he put real effort into its creation.
I re-watched the movie this past week and it was just how I remembered it. It had some really good laughs in there and some really cringe moments as well. I have to say that Rip Torn, the actor who played Tom’s dad, did a phenomenal job. If award shows like the Oscars weren’t so cowardly, they would consider performances like this for their award. He was really great.
Anyway, I give Freddy Got Fingered 71 potatoes (out of a possible 100). It’s a solid, goofy, cringey comedy that never gets boring and keeps you pretty well locked-in. I’m sure movie snobs and self-proclaimed humor experts would find this review and score laughable or outrageous. Who cares?
