The Accountant 2 – Movie Review

I checked this one out last night on Amazon Prime. I had been looking forward to seeing this movie. I thought the first one was pretty good (75/100 potatoes).

The first movie was made 8 years ago and was profitable, which makes me wonder why they waited 8 years for a sequel. They assembled the same director and writers for The Accountant 2, which means it had a great shot at being good.

One thing that drives me nuts is how lazy movies have gotten when it comes to effects and gunfire. The actors pretend they are shooting and the nerds in post-production add CGI flash and fake smoke, even when the weapon has a long suppressor. If you are spending $100M to make a movie, just hire a competent armorer (Not Alec Baldwin’s) , handout flesh-colored earplugs and go live fire. Use blood packet squibs and give your movie a realistic feel. I know it takes hard work, but you are making a sh*t load of money.  CGI gun battles are annoying to a great deal of us watching.

If obvious CGI effects drive you nuts like they do me, the entire finale will do so as well. Every gunshot and every impact are CGI. Plus, they added a cloud of fake dust to every scene.

This movie lost the seriousness and mystery that they first one established. We now see our main character vulnerable as he bumbles his way through the movie whereas the first one, he was a serious assassin… cold, calculating and logical. They decided to create a scene where he has a small army of autistic people doing all his hacking for him (terrible). This is another movie that tries to sell us that autism is some sort of superpower. Where do we all sign up!?

The main character’s mystery friend with the British accent is now front-and-center. They show her jumping around this big data center looking at the big screen, like something out of a spy movie (think Eye in the Sky – 2015).

Anyway, there were some funny moments and some decent action scenes but overall, it felt a little disjointed & discombobulated. I’m not even going to get into the plot holes or ridiculous villains. I found myself rolling my eyes no fewer than 5 times watching this movie. It does not stand up to the expectations set by the first one. I cannot say this is a good movie. It is watchable and entertaining at times but it’s not good. I gave it 60/100 potatoes. In my mind, this movie killed off the potential for a series of great films.
