Sometimes it pays off to just mindlessly put a movie on and not do any research about it first. I was out of town, in my VRBO with some downtime on my hands. The TV had someone else’s YouTube account logged in. So, I was seeing a bunch of movie and video suggestions that I would not see otherwise. One of these videos was simply titled “She Saw Something She Shouldn’t Have” and the thumbnail image was what looked like the supernatural villain from Jeepers Creepers fame. I decided to let it play.
The beginning started a little hokie and felt like a low-budget flick. There is an entire sequence which happens at a graveyard that felt a little contrived. But I marched on. What developed was actually quite interesting. The stand-off began when the hitman (Lawrence Fishburne) chases a little girl to a random local house in the middle of nowhere. The resident of the home was a down-and-out man dealing with his own personal drama and demons played by Thomas Jane.
I don’t want to give away too many details and ruin the plot but honestly, I was surprised that I was actually getting into this movie. It turned out to be pretty darn decent. The writing was good, the acting was good, and direction was decent too. Was it a masterpiece? Not by any stretch of the imagination. But it was a situational thriller that had you guessing what would happen next. I give this movie 75/100 potatoes. I didn’t even learn the name of it until days later when I was telling a friend about it and needed a name to give her. It is called “Standoff”, was made in 2016 and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of just 57% with the critics and 47% with the public.
